Children long to be loved.

Children long to be loved. When they are loved consistently and in meaningful ways by adults in their lives who also love Jesus, the children end up falling deeply in love with Jesus themselves. That’s the message of Deuteronomy 6.

However, that’s not the “norm” in our culture and in many others around the world. Dallas Willard shared the grim news during a talk in 2001 when he acknowledged that it is now statistically and anecdotally common to find that Christians generally do not differ significantly [...]

We Invite You to Dream

We’ve been talking quite a bit about spiritual formation of children and even a new project that KidZ at Heart is starting with Grafted Life Ministries. We invite you to dream with us.

Can you imagine...

  1. Casting a fresh vision for the church that thriving relationships with God and others are important at every age. There is no reason children can’t become aware of God’s presence in their everyday life. In fact, some would say they are as open to connecting with God, moment by [...]

What does God do when he wants to get your attention?

For us, it often comes in the form of an idea bigger than we dare embrace followed by an excitement that just cannot be dampened. That’s exactly what happened to us recently.

New friends, new partners, new opportunities

God unexpectedly captured our attention in February. We were presenting our “Connecting Kids with God” workshop at the Spiritual Formation Society of Arizona’s 2018 National Conference. Since the foundation of spiritual formation is relationships, it should not have been [...]

We’ve seen it countless times over the past 16 years of training in other cultures. Local teachers, parents, and children’s leaders attend a KidZ at Heart training, and their lives and ministries are transformed. They embrace and immediately implement what they’ve learned. Children’s lives are impacted as they engage in and experience vital biblical truths. But something’s missing, or rather someone’s missing. During the training, attendees begin advocating for those who aren’t there to experience the same training.

This is the same situation in each country [...]

KidZ Doesn’t Put on VBS Programs in Other Countries

One of our favorite events of the year is Vacation Bible School. Churches across the United States attract crowds of children to their VBS programs each summer.

So why is it that KidZ at Heart does not put on Vacation Bible Schools around the world?

When we began dreaming about an international ministry to reach children for Jesus, one of our earliest contacts was the pastor of Riga Matthew Church, Pēteris Sproģis, in the capital city of Latvia. The ministry of Matthew Church was well-known across [...]

Gordon & Becki – KidZ Newsletter March 2018

Children and God connect with each other rather naturally and in many of the same ways that adults connect with God. As adults, we sometimes think we need to “help” both children and God to connect. But that’s not necessarily so! God and his children are pretty good at building a relationship when they are given a chance to do so.

In February, KidZ at Heart was privileged to be part of the 2018 Annual Conference of the [...]

KidZ at Heart Lives Out 2 Timothy 2:2

By | 2017-05-02T15:10:28+00:00 May 2, 2017|Gordon D. West: Blog Posts, KidZ Stories, Staff Blogs|

In the past, we’ve shared how KidZ at Heart avoids creating dependency by not taking lots of stuff overseas, how we encourage local ownership of the ministry by not “putting on” VBS programs for them, and how we raise up local leaders by training them instead of undermining them by working directly with children. But it’s not enough to simply avoid unintended consequences. We also purposefully share training programs that can be replicated across cities, regions, and denominations.

KidZ Doesn’t Undermine Local Leaders

The week after a visit from a short-term missions team from North America, a young African boy blurted out to his Sunday school teacher, “Why can’t you be funny like the Americans?”

This is the alarming story that we have heard from missionaries and church leaders in more than one country. It is this sort of unintended consequence that we have sought to avoid, and why KidZ at Heart’s short-term teams do not work directly with children in other cultures. [...]
