Tax-Smart Ways to Give

Thoughtful giving can multiply your impact. Here are four strategies that may allow you to give more — and keep less for the IRS. We encourage you to speak with your financial advisor about which approach fits your situation.

A Donor-Advised Fund is like a charitable savings account. You contribute to the fund, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then recommend grants to nonprofits like KidZ at Heart over time — on your schedule.

Why it's powerful: You can bunch multiple years of giving into one large contribution (maximizing your deduction in a high-income year), then distribute those funds to us gradually. DAFs also accept non-cash assets like stock, simplifying complex gifts.

How to give: Log into your DAF provider (Fidelity Charitable, Schwab Charitable, Vanguard Charitable, etc.) and search for KidZ at Heart International. Our EIN is available on request.

If you own stocks, mutual funds, or real estate that have increased in value, donating them directly to KidZ at Heart is often more efficient than selling them and donating cash.

Why it's powerful: When you donate appreciated assets held for more than one year, you typically avoid paying capital gains tax on the growth — and you still receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value. This can be significantly more impactful than a cash gift of the same size.

Example: Stock purchased for $5,000 now worth $15,000. Selling triggers tax on $10,000 of gains. Donating it directly means we receive the full $15,000 and you deduct $15,000.

If you are 70½ or older, you can make a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) directly from your IRA to KidZ at Heart — up to $105,000 per year (2024 limit, indexed for inflation).

Why it's powerful: A QCD counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) but is excluded from your taxable income entirely. Unlike a regular charitable deduction, you benefit even if you take the standard deduction — making it one of the most tax-efficient giving strategies available to retirees.

How to give: Contact your IRA custodian and request a direct transfer to KidZ at Heart International. The check must be made payable directly to us, not to you.

The 2024 standard deduction is $14,600 for individuals and $29,200 for married couples. If your typical charitable giving falls below those thresholds, you likely don't benefit from itemizing — meaning your giving doesn't reduce your tax bill at all.

Why it's powerful: By "bunching" two or three years of planned giving into a single year, you push your itemized deductions above the standard threshold, unlocking a real tax benefit. In alternate years, you take the standard deduction.

How to give: A Donor-Advised Fund pairs perfectly with bunching — contribute a large lump sum to the DAF in a high-deduction year, receive the full deduction, then distribute grants to KidZ at Heart on your regular schedule.
